So I was in the car the other day and Billionaire by Travie McCoy came on the radio. As I was listening to the catchy beat I started to notice the lyrics. This song hit me. It reminded me of so many people I know and what our culture tells us is most important in life. As I was thinking on the lyrics, “I wanna be a billionaire so fricking bad; Buy all of the things I never had; Uh, I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine; Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen” I started to think about what really make a difference in life. Does money, notoriety and fame really make someone happy? Would McCoy really be satisfied and feel his life was complete if he obtained these things?

This week has been one of disillusionment and awakening. It has been both heartbreaking and eye-opening. The most destructive kinds of people are those that act contrary to the values they proclaim. Of course this is no surprise; Satan has mastered the art of manipulating the truth and deceiving men. It is only when one comes face to face with such blatant opposition to Christ and self-arrogance that one is reminded of Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Beaten bloody, beyond recognition. Muscles and flesh torn from the body. Pain so agonizing breath is impossible. Weakness, broken beyond the ability to stand. Forced to carry over 100 pounds only to have that weight used to hang you by sharp nails. Beaten, bleeding and suffocating under your own weight as you hang by nails driven through your flesh.

I spoke with an old friend last night and it reminded me of the plight of many Christians. Life is hard and we all experience different phases which leave us jaded and disillusioned. The romance of what life was supposed to be like has faded and the realities of life have a way of wearing us down until we are mere stumps of our former spiritual selves. Our first encounter with God has long since passed away and we find that the light and joy it once brought us has dimmed almost to the point of being extinguished. We remember the days when we received comfort and joy from our walk with Christ, yet we can’t seem to figure out how we ended up so far away from Him, nor are we aware of how to return to that communion with Him. The world has a tendency of eroding our spiritual lives, if left unmaintained, and one day we wake up and feel as though we are lost in a desert, uncertain of which direction will lead us home.
