As Christ followers, we are the branches. We are dependent upon the vine or trunk for nourishment; Christ is the source. Through our faith and relationship with Christ we know that we will be fed continually by His spirit. In the same way we are responsible for feeding others with the nourishment we have received from Christ. As the branches feed the leaves and produce fruit, so we as Christ followers must feed those still new to the faith and those who might develop faith in the future. It is our responsibility to spread the word of Christ to those with whom we come in contact.
Different people attempt to implement this in different ways. The majority of Christians feed when it’s convenient and will not cost them anything in the form of time, money, reputation, etc., but otherwise, sequester the nourishment they are receiving from Christ and hoard it to themselves. For those who fall into this category, the important part of this verse is that those who are nourished by Christ should “bear much fruit.” That is the natural result of nourishment from Christ. If your hoarding what Christ has given to you or done for you, if you are not generously sharing Christ with others, especially when it will cost you something, then you are not bearing much fruit, if any, you might actually be feeding off of something other than Christ. Seek Christ and share Him with your leaves! Share Him with those you interact with on a daily basis.
This is a beautiful responsibility, but it can also be a daunting one. Some Christians take it to the opposite extreme. They feel so responsible for all the leaves they see that they are not able to properly nourish any of them. Their heart is in the right place, but they’re putting themselves in the place of God. Just as every leaf is connected to a branch, so every person that desires to know their creator will be connected to a messenger. You do not have to take care of them all. God is God and will care for all who truly desire Him. Nourish your leaves and trust God to nourish the rest through His other branches! Share Him with those you interact with on a daily basis.
